Reading 3 Looping Sketchbook

Slavery is one of the topics that is sometimes hard to explain to students because the true detailed story is not told to them. Rosa Parks is an example of how misinterpretations occurred because of how books are written making students confused of what really happened. The information given is broad, making the important details be missing, making misunderstandings of what really happen in those events.  The least thing teachers would want to do is to have the concept of history about slavery loose it’s meaning about. Also, knowing how to deliver the lesson and not have students re-enact this type of settings because that can cause problems. A good role-play is the one that engages the mind, not making a setting where it can be damaging to students. As it mentions in the reading about Rosa Parks, “that we need a new story, one not only more in line with the truth but one that shows the organizational skills and determination.” (Herbert Kohl. (n.d.) The Politics of Children's Literature: What's Wrong with the Rosa Parks Myth.) Stating how things exactly were can be helpful for students to understand.

Reading 2 Looping Sketchbook

The readings for this week were interesting in the way that it made me think way back of the things I was being taught about history. Even though I may not remember many things, I do consider that some things may have not been said. As one of the readings mention, "If we act wisely, we can change that world, and create a much better one." (Harari, Y. N. (2015). Homo deus: A brief history of tomorrow. London: Vintage Digital.) Considering that there might be things that we are interested and that we like, we need to consider what the students also need to know. It's not just about what we like, but how it actually is. In this article, I was able to learn about the history of lawns, which is something that was never taught to me and I really didn't think about a purpose of lawns. To me is just in front of a house where plants are planted to make it look nice. I never thought it would represent power a long time ago. It's interesting to learn this kinds of things, and because it's something new to me, it seems that it wasn't consider important for children to know about it. We shouldn't let the future children be thoughtful of the past.

Reading 1 Looping Sketchbook

As I was reading the article, it made me think about how there is actually people who are trying to learn new things and even a language in a new country where they just moved in. It's just about trying to find that help to become a better person. The thing is that now in society, it's hard asking some people for help because they can be racist and judgmental of hearing that someone wants to become better. Even if they are not form this country, that doesn't mean that they can't learn how to do things or learn a new language when they are willing to do that. Personally, I like helping people, and it makes me happy to see someone else's achievement. Since I am someone who likes helping, something that I see myself and agree with is with the quote, " I became a teacher because I knew I wanted a positive change in the world."(Cowhey, M. (2006). Black ants and Buddhists: Thinking critically and teaching differently in the primary grades. Portland: Stenhouse).  When I read this, I even felt motivated to keep going with my degree and I can see that there is people out there trying to make a change in their lives by asking for help. Even if they ask the wrong person for help, giving up is not an option. The only option is to keep going until it is achieved.
